Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco to Soraypampa - Hike to Humantay Lake

Early Morning:

  • Pick-up from Cusco: You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Cusco (around 4:30 AM to 5:00 AM) to start your journey to the Sacred Valley.
  • Drive to Mollepata: The bus will drive you to the town of Mollepata (about 2 hours), where you’ll stop for breakfast.
  • Drive to Soraypampa: From Mollepata, you’ll continue on an unpaved road to Soraypampa (another 1.5 hours). Soraypampa is the base camp for the trek to Humantay Lake and sits at an altitude of about 3,900 meters (12,800 feet).

Trekking to Humantay Lake:

  • Start the hike: From Soraypampa, the hike to Humantay Lake begins (roughly 1.5–2 hours of steep uphill walking). This section is challenging due to the high altitude, so pace yourself and take breaks as needed.
  • Arrival at Humantay Lake: Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with the incredible sight of the lake and its turquoise waters set against the backdrop of towering mountains. Spend time here, take photos, and enjoy the natural beauty of the site.

Lunch:

  • After your visit to the lake, head back down to Soraypampa for a well-deserved lunch, which is usually included in the tour (it’s often a packed lunch or a simple Peruvian meal).

Camp or Overnight Stay:

  • Set up camp or head to the lodge: After lunch, you’ll either set up camp at Soraypampa (if you’re camping) or stay in a nearby mountain lodge if you prefer more comfort. This gives you the chance to relax and acclimate further. The evening will be spent enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Dinner and Rest:

    • Enjoy a warm dinner and relax. If you’re camping, your guide will likely provide a communal dinner with the group. If you’re staying at a lodge, you’ll have a more comfortable dining experience.

Day 2: Hike Back to Soraypampa and Return to Cusco

Early Morning:

  • Breakfast at camp or lodge: Start the day with a hearty breakfast to fuel the trek back.
  • Optional early morning hike or rest: If you feel up to it, you could take an early morning walk to enjoy the sunrise views over Humantay Lake or explore the area around Soraypampa before your return.

Morning Trek:

  • Return to Soraypampa: After breakfast, you’ll hike back down to Soraypampa, which usually takes about 1–1.5 hours. The return trek is downhill, so it’s less strenuous than the ascent.

Lunch:

  • Enjoy another lunch at Soraypampa or along the way (depending on the timing of the tour).

Drive Back to Cusco:

  • Return to Cusco: After lunch, you’ll be driven back to Cusco. The drive takes about 3–4 hours, and you’ll likely arrive in the late afternoon or early evening.

INCLUDE:

  • Transport: Round-trip transportation from Cusco to Soraypampa (via Mollepata).
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the trek (usually provided by the tour operator, unless otherwise stated).
  • Guide: A professional guide to help navigate the trail and ensure your safety.
  • Overnight accommodation: Depending on your choice, either camping equipment or a basic lodge at Soraypampa.
  • Entrance Fees: Some tours may include the entrance fee to the area.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR THE 2-DAY TREK:

  • Acclimatization: Since you’ll be spending more time at high altitudes, make sure you’re well-acclimatized before starting the trek. If possible, spend a couple of days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to adjust.
  • Physical Preparation: The trek will be more demanding due to the higher elevation and the added day of hiking. Be prepared for steep climbs, and bring plenty of water and snacks.
  • Camping Gear: If you’re camping, make sure the tour operator provides tents, sleeping bags, and mats. Bring a small personal bag with essentials, as the trek is relatively short.
  • Weather: Pack for a variety of weather conditions. Days can be sunny and warm, but mornings and evenings are chilly. A good jacket and layers are essential.
